What a game at Pomfret Community School had on March 11! The gym was packed and the energy was incredible as staff took on students in the annual matchup.

After a fast-paced and high-scoring battle, the final score was:
Staff – 102
Students – 99

The students pushed hard and kept it close all the way to the final buzzer, but the staff held on for a 3-point victory!

Great effort by everyone who played and a big thank you to the crowd for bringing the spirit!

The sixth grade annual field trip to Adventure Park occurred the first day of October with cool temps, sunshine and much joy at the ropes course in Storrs, CT. Students had the opportunity to practice perseverance as they faced new obstacles high above the ground while encouragement shouted through the trees built strong peer relationships and resilience. Students reported feeling the freedom of independence to choose just the right challenge for themselves, and look forward to returning with family and friends in the future. The sixth grade team of teachers is appreciative of the PTO’s generosity in contributing to the cost of this beloved trip.

The Boys Basketball team had an amazing season finishing 4th in the division and making the playoffs. The team was led by captains Jake Jaworski and Liam Bertram, along with the rest of the 8th graders Theo DeChellis, Eli Hamilton, and Deven Mix. After starting the year 2-4, losing very close games against Thompson and Parish Hill, the boys responded in the second half of the season going 4-2. They finished the year 6-6 which was good enough to tie for the 3rd best record in the league. The highlights of the season were avenging losses to Thompson and Parish Hill by beating them the second time we played. We won by 16 points against Thompson and Parish Hill by 1 point on a buzzer beater from 7th grader Matthew Therrien, who was also our leading scorer. Our season came to an end in the playoffs against Putnam who was undefeated and a very tough team. Other 7th graders who you may see pictured in this game and contributed during the season are Ryan Turbesi, Brandon Schultz, Brock Lyons, Clay Dunning, and Gavin Deasy.

After learning about the volume of rectangular prisms, the 5th graders created animal creatures out of different sized rectangular boxes. They computed the volumes of all the different sized boxes then found the total volume of their animal creature. When they finished their calculations, they decorated and embellished their animal creatures.

PEACEJAM HAT & GLOVE DRIVE

We are so proud of our PeaceJam leaders! We have heard that our donation boxes are filling up. This is amazing news for our friends at Access Agency and their current and future residents during the cold months.

We are going to extend our drive to Tuesday November 23rd to have the opportunity for one final push of donations before the Thanksgiving Break. Please remind family, friends, colleagues, and community partners that even if their own young people don't attend PCS they can still make donations through our social media accounts, by emailing PCSPEACEJAM@gmail.com, or contacting Lisa Marie Rivera at 860.753.6015.

Thank you for all of your ongoing support in helping our youth understand the power of their voice and actions in making change in their world!

Also, Congratulations for PeaceJam once again spreading the word of peace and change within the community. You were once again featured in the Villager. We should all be so proud of our PCS Community!

Letters to Soldiers from Grade 4

The fourth grade enjoyed the story "The Wall" by Eve Bunting and held a discussion about the contribution that many people make by choosing to become a soldier. We also enjoyed the story of the Poppy Lady, a true story about the origin of the poppy as a symbol of support for our military. Many students shared personal connections about parents and grandparents who have made sacrifices to do this work for our country and communities. Ryder Manning's brother Nick is currently in bootcamp, and his mother shared that there are many young soldiers who are committed to this work, but also face self doubt and could use the love and encouragement. We thought this was a great opportunity to send a little love and support to those selfless young soldiers.

Farm to Families Comes to Pomfret

During the month of October, Pomfret Community School was a distribution organization for "Farm to Family", the USDA grant-funded program that provided over 100 packages of food to Pomfret families each week. The boxes contained 5 lbs. of meat, 5 lbs. of dairy, 13 lbs. of produce and a gallon of milk. The school would like to thank M&J bus drivers for their support transporting the food and teacher Ryan Ericson for giving his time on Wednesdays to facilitate the distribution operation.

Firefighter Visits PCS PreK

On Thursday October 15, Aaron Breen visited Mrs. Breen's preschool class. Aaron has been a volunteer at Mortlake Fire Company in Brooklyn for 2 years. He grew up around firefighters and medical responders. His Mom, Pre-School teacher Mrs. Breen, has been a member of Mortlake for 29 years and his father, Mr. Breen is currently Chief. Aaron showed the preschoolers what a firefighter wears and explained each piece of equipment to them as he got dressed. He donned an air pack so they could hear how muffled and a bit scary a firefighter may look if they ever need help. They were a little unsure about when he put his hood, mask and helmet on but loved seeing a firefighter in full gear.

Mrs. McKee's 4th grade class investigated the research question: How do animal structures support survival, growth, and reproduction? In order to support student understanding, the class dissected a preserved squid in teams of two. As students dissected they discussed, the beak, tentacles, arms, suckers, ink sack, gills, esophagus, stomach, eyes, egg sack, funnel and pen and how each structure supported this cephalopod's survival. These specimens were purchased through the Enel Solar Farm Grant. These future scientists approached the task with curiosity and excitement. During the follow up discussion, they rated it 5 stars!

PCS Kindergarten explores the Science of Sound

The kindergarten classes in Pomfret Community School experienced the science of sound. “Science of Sound: When is it Music” was a 45-60 minute exploration of the nature and creation of sound, through hands-on activities, observation, creative exploration and song. The program was led by Sally Rogers, a master teaching artist with the Connecticut Office of the Arts. Students were able to engage in inquiry-based learning and guided critical thinking to explore principles of sound and how music is created.

This program was one of the free education programs offered by Performing Arts of Northeast CT. Performing Arts is an all-volunteer non-profit organization funded by private and state grants, local businesses and individual donations.
Alex, We Love You 1,000 Cranes from Pomfret Community School students

In Japan, the crane is a mystical creature that is believed to live for 1,000 years, making it a representation of good fortune and hope. Traditionally, the folding of 1,000 origami cranes is believed to result in one’s wish coming true. The symbolic gesture has become one of hope and healing during challenging times.

Following Alex Trebek’s pancreatic cancer diagnosis, the students of Pomfret Community School in Pomfret Center, Connecticut, gifted him with 1,000 origami cranes. Alex and the entire Jeopardy! family find the same inspiration in the multiple strings of cranes now proudly flying in their new home on Stage 10.
